Build the foundation of scientific knowledge and practical decision-making skills needed to excel in an exercise training career
Master the core concepts of exercise physiology and learn how to apply them to the real-world challenges of exercise training with Exercise Physiology: Integrating Theory and Application, Third Edition. Designed to connect theory to practice, this engaging, accessible text gives students a thorough understanding of how the body adapts to exercise and environmental stresses and how basic physiology informs practical decisions. This new edition expands the coverage of practical applications, extends on our growing scientific knowledge of exercise physiology, explores the topic of “Exercise is Medicine”, and offers more guidance on finding reliable research-based answers to real-life questions.
New content, as well as updated coverage of the endocrine system, applying research, nutritional support, and environmental effects make this the perfect resource to support the diverse case scenarios seen by personal trainers, strength coaches, fitness instructors, athletic trainers, and other exercise professionals.
- Chapter Objectives, Quick Review boxes, Did You Know? boxes, More to Explore boxes, and full-color illustrations help readers digest and retain key concepts.
- Case Studies, Expert View boxes, and Applying Research boxes offer firsthand opinions from experts on specific real-world issues, explain how to apply research findings in practice, and hone decision-making skills.
- Practical Questions from Students boxes answer frequently asked questions on topics that readers may find challenging and of interest.
- Review Questions at the end of each chapter give students a chance to assess and apply their knowledge through short-answer and critical thinking questions.
- Bonus online animations, videos, and interactive quiz bank bring physiological processes and practical applications to life and reinforce learning.
Lippincott® Connect features:
- Lifetime access to the digital version of the book with the ability to highlight and take notes on key passages for a more personal, efficient study experience.
- Carefully curated resources, including interactive diagrams, video tutorials, flashcards, organ sounds, and self-assessment, all designed to facilitate further comprehension.
Lippincott® Connect also allows users to create Study Collections to further personalize the study experience. With Study Collections you can:
- Pool content from books across your entire library into self-created Study Collections based on discipline, procedure, organ, concept or other topics.
- Display related text passages, video clips and self-assessment questions from each book (if available) for efficient absorption of material.
- Annotate and highlight key content for easy access later.
- Navigate seamlessly between book chapters, sections, self-assessments, notes and highlights in a single view/page.

Dr. William J. Kraemer is a full professor in the Department of Human Sciences in the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University. Prior to this appointment, he held full professorships at the University of Connecticut, Ball State University, and The Pennsylvania State University, along with joint appointments at the medical schools of these institutions. He also has been a teacher and coach at the secondary and college levels and was a Captain in the US Army working at the U.S. Army’s Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Natick, MA. Dr. Kraemer is a Fellow in several organizations including the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He has served as a member of the ACSM’s Board of Trustees and Administrative Council and is a past President of the NSCA. He has authored and coauthored over 500 peer-reviewed manuscripts in the scientific literature. He received numerous awards for his work and research over his career including the 2020 ACSM Citation Award and the ACSM’s Joseph B. Wolfe Memorial Lecture Award along with receiving the NSCA’s Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2016, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland.
Steven J. Fleck, PhD, during his career, has been the chair of kinesiology sport science departments at several universities and a sports science administrator in the private sector. His research interests include physiological adaptations to resistance training and application of research findings to optimize resistance training program design. His research interests are not limited to physiological adaptations and the training of elite athletes but also include the training of the general population, from youth to seniors, as well as individuals with various diseases, such as cancer, McArdle disease, and cystic fibrosis. During his career, Dr. Fleck has designed conditioning programs for celebrities interested in general health and fitness, as well as high school, collegiate, professional, and Olympic athletes in a wide variety of sports. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed research articles as well as several books in the broad area of physical conditioning. Dr. Fleck is a Fellow of both the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the American College of Sports Medicine, and he is the past President of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. For his work, he has received numerous awards and honors including the NSCA’s Sport Scientist of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, and 2020 Impact Award given to an individual who has had a major impact on the fitness and conditioning industry.
Michael R. Deschenes received his PhD in 1992 from the Department of Physiology and Neurobiology at the University of Connecticut. He then did postdoctoral work in the Department of Physiology at the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. After leaving SUNY, Dr. Deschenes assumed his current faculty position in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences at the College of William and Mary where he currently serves as Professor and Chair. He is also a member of the faculty in William and Mary’s Program in Neuroscience. Dr. Deschenes’ research focuses on the neuromuscular system and its functional and morphological adaptations to both increased (exercise) and decreased (muscle unloading) activity. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, an associate editor for Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, and a senior associate editor for the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.
